Week #2 Activity: Solar Eclipse Kit

This week’s Summer Reading Club activities are all about science. Experiment with light by building a Solar Eclipse Kit, then learn about density with Water Fireworks!

Follow these steps:

  1. Gather your materials: shoebox (or other small rectangular box, scissors, black cardstock (or thick construction paper), yellow tissue paper, tape, toothpick (or thin craft stick)
  2. Cut a window at each end of your box and then cut a slit across the width (or top) of the box lid.
  3. Cut out a square of black card small enough to slide into the slit in the box.
  4. Cut out a circle from the middle of the card and stick yellow tissue paper over the hole.
  5. Stick the toothpick to the black card circle (you will use this as your Moon).
  6. Slide the square of black card into the slot on the box and hold the box up to the light. Look through it to see your Sun

Week #3’s Activity: Rock Painting

Bring a piece of the outdoors, inside! Painting rocks has been a popular pastime for a long time, and it’s a fun way to spread a bit of joy. All you need are rocks and painting supplies. Decorate your rocks to look like animals, plants, or anything else you want!

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • Rocks
  • Paint
  • Paper plates (for holding paint)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Cups of water
  • Paper towel
  • Newspapers to cover painting area

Steps to Follow:

  • Think of a design that will suit your rock
  • Gather your supplies
  • Paint your design, have fun!
  • Display your rocks on your window sill, the garden, in a forest, or wherever you choose 🙂
