Lee Edward Födi is a children’s author, illustrator, and educator—or, in other words, a daydreaming expert.
Lee grew up on a small farm in the Okanagan Valley. Each summer, while his friends were off vacationing, Lee was subjected to various horrible chores such as cleaning up after chickens, pigs, geese, and younger siblings. What he really wanted to be doing was travelling and exploring. And he did, after a fashion, by writing, drawing and telling stories. Originally, Lee’s father hoped that his son would take over the family farm—but these dreams came to an abrupt end when the young author accidentally plowed the tractor over his dad’s outhouse (thankfully, his dad was not inside at the time).
As a result, Lee went on to pursue his love of art, mythology, and storytelling, all of which (luckily) do not require any skill in operating heavy machinery. He is the author and illustrator of The Chronicles of Kendra Kandlestar, which include The Box of Whispers, The Door to Unger, The Shard from Greeve, The Crack in Kazah, and the The Search for Arazeen. He has also illustrated several picture books for other authors.
When Lee is not daydreaming himself, he teaches kids how to do it through creative writing workshops. Sure, kids might seem pretty good at daydreaming already, but in Lee’s experience, most of them haven't learned how to put it to good use . . . yet.
Lee loves travelling and especially enjoys visiting exotic places where he can explore tombs, mazes, castles, and crypts. He calls Vancouver home, where he lives with his wife and unhelpful cat.

The Polar Bear
This friendly polar bear is the crew’s bookwright—or, as you might think of him, an engineer. He’s responsible for keeping the portal book running at tip-top shape, so is always tinkering away with his gadgets and gizmos to coax more adventure from the ship. In truth, Fixxer isn’t quite as daring as his friends, so he’s always glad when they have a moment to pause, rest, and enjoy a frothy mug of ice-cold chocolate milk.
The Travel Bug
Often called “Cogs” by his friends, Caboodle is the navigator aboard the portal book. He is a rare species of insect known as the travel bug, which means he’s restless and can never stay in one place for long. Unlike Amelia, he prefers to have a plan and is an expert in cartography, astronomy, and instrumentation. He has many compasses, telescopes, and chronometers—some of them built-in—to help him keep the crew on course.
The Flying Squirrel
As pilot of the portal book, Amelia doesn’t mind getting her paws dirty. She loves adventure, whether its soaring to the top of the highest peak or diving to the bottom of the deepest ocean. She has the heart of an explorer—she’s happy as long as she has her ship, her trusty sidekicks, and the wind in her whiskers.
